Obinna Ogbuagu

Obinna is a 1998 honours graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in October 2000. He has an LL.M degree from the University of Jos. A Notary Public of Nigeria, Obinna is also a Certified Negotiator, a Member of the International Bar Association, Commonwealth Lawyers Association, Nigerian Bar Association, an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK (Nigeria Branch) and a Registered Professional (Legal Practitioner) with the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria – (FRC/2015/NBA/00000013154).

has attended several courses and conferences and has been in private practice since completing his National Youth Service with the Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja. Prior to Gray Mata Solicitors, Obinna had worked with Wali-Uwais & Co from 2003 to March 2016 when he left as the Managing Partner. He is the driving force of Gray Mata Solicitors

He has extensive work experience in both corporate and public sector practice

• Advised TETFUND on several contracts, labour/employee matters and legal/regulatory issues, as well as represented the Fund in litigation and arbitration cases consistently in the last 12 to 13 years
• Involved in several Initial Public Offers, Public Offers and Rights Issue involving several Banks including Standard Trust Bank, Oceanic Bank, First Bank, UBA and Jaiz International Plc
• Co-Advised Habib (Nigeria) Bank Ltd. in its merger with Platinum Bank Plc
• Advised Bank of the North Ltd. in its merger transaction with Unity Bank Plc
• Advised Unity Bank in its recent divestment of Shares to new Core Investors
• Co-Advised AMCON in the Issuance of Zero Coupon Bonds for the acquisition of Non-Performing Loans of some commercial Banks
• Part of the Team engaged in the FCMB Finbank Merger
• Advised First Bank of Nigeria Plc on it divestment of its entire shareholding from First Registrars
• Part of the Team engaged in the First Bank of Nigeria Plc. restructuring in order to adhere to the CBN requirement for banks to confirm to the Holdco banking structure
• Advised Jaiz International Plc in its private placement and the eventual setting-up and licensing of Jaiz Bank Plc, and have advised the Bank in several other capacities in the last 10 to 12 years
• Advised USAID, USADF, CIHP, Nigerian Women Fund and BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights in various capacities and transactions
